General De Castries Tunnel, Dien Bien Phu City
It is hard to believe that this tunnel, only 20m long and 8m wide, was the headquarters of of the French Army. Four compartments served as both working offices and residence for the General and his staff.
It was here here, General De Castries welcomed high ranking delegations from France, England, and the USA, as well as many journalists. The headquarters were protected by barbed wire fences, mine fields, four army tanks and a military regiment. It was here that the ifamous photo of the Vietnamese flag being raised on top of the tunnel on 7 May 1954 was taken. Reproduced countless times, the image is firmly imprinted in the minds of all Vietnamese as a symbol of independence.
